Tecumseh Savages Basketball Team Preview – Presented By Natalie Arnett of State Farm

BOYS

Coach: Bryant Edwards

20-21 Record: 6-13

The Savages struggled to a 6-13 record last season, but for head coach Bryant Edwards, the season went better than their record shows. “Of the thirteen games we lost last season, ten of them were by single digits,” Edwards said. “We graduated two players off of that team and we are also adding four players that did not play. Dylan Graham, Jaxon Meyers, Ben Corley, and Brennon Carter all sat out last year but are all expected to make an impact on the season. This year’s team looks to learn from last year’s season and build upon it for what has a chance to be a big season for the Savages.” Brady Overstreet (5-9, Jr.) is an outstanding shooter and ball handler. He averaged 14 points per game last season and looks to continue that impact this season. Another returner is Davon Mays (5-10, Sr.), who finished second in the conference for defensive player of the year. He is one of the team’s best defenders and will work to wreak havoc on the opponents. Sophomore Jase Edwards (6-1, So.) led the freshman and junior varsity team last season. He looks to have a strong shooting presence on the varsity team. Other Savages to keep an eye on this year are Jay Mitchell (6-5, Sr.), Zerek Harjo (5-10, Jr.), and Marquan Krush (6-3, So.).

GIRLS

Coach: Eldon Gentry II

20-21 Record: 19-6

After advancing to the Area tournament last season, the Lady Savages are coming into the new season ready to grow off that of success. Head coach Eldon Gentry II says the team is working hard and are ready to show what they have. “This year we are looking to continue program success even though we lost four starters,” Gentry said. “We will be young, only having one senior, but are looking to get better every game leading to a deep playoff run. What we will lack in experience, we will make up for with competitiveness from our younger girls. They know the expectation and are ready to live up to it.” Kenzli Warden (5-9, Jr.) led the team with 16.5 points and 6.3 rebounds per game last season. She is an unbelievable athlete with great shooting ability, which can make her a matchup problem for most teams. Coming off of an ACL injury that kept her off of the court last season, Schantel Evans (6-0, Sr.) is a solid rim protector and is a size problem for opponents. Coming back this season is Sami Schweighardt (5-10, So.) who was a big part of the Lady Savages’ success last season. She is looking to have an outstanding season with more playing time. Two other players that are expected to have an impact this season are Serenity Jacoway (5-8, So.) and Jadyn Wilson (5-5, So.).
