Tecumseh’s Jaxon Meyers – Athlete Spotlight – Presented By State Farm Agent Natalie Arnett

By Chris Cox

Tecumseh High School senior Jaxon Meyers is the definition of a multi-sport athlete. In the fall, he plays wide receiver and defensive back for Tecumseh. In the winter, he’s a guard for the basketball team and in the spring, he plays middle infield and outfield for the Tecumseh baseball team.

Meyers admits it’s not always easy going from one sport to the next, but he feels it teaches him some valuable life lessons.

“Playing all those sports helps me with time management and it makes me constantly work hard,” says Meyers. “Right now, I’m in basketball, but after practice, I’ll go hit and play catch to start getting ready for baseball. It helps me work harder and not be complacent.”

It’s that hard work and determined attitude that earned Meyers the honor of being a Character Counts athlete.

While character can mean something different to everyone, Meyers says it’s what you do when no one is watching.

“Character is what you do when no one else is looking,” he says. “Doing things for other people, going out of your way to help others, being a good teammate, that’s all character.”

Being a multi-sport athlete, Meyers has a lot of teammates. Meyers and his fellow senior athletes expected to lead those teammates.

“Our coaches tell us to lead by example but also vocally, when needed,” says Meyers. “They want us to know that the underclassmen are always watching us to see what we’re doing. We just try to go out of our way to offer them a ride home, take them to lunch, and things like that.”

Meyers credits his parents, James and Erin, for helping shape the person he is today.

“They always do things for other people,” says Meyers. “They’ve told me just to treat people the way I would want to be treated.”

Along with his busy sports schedule, Meyers is involved in student council, National Honor Society, and Link Crew at Tecumseh. Following graduation, Meyers plans on attending Seminole State before finishing his degree in physical therapy at OU.
