Heritage Hall Chargers Football Preview – Presented By Bogert Energy Partners

BRETT BOGERT

12-1

OFFENSE

The Heritage Hall Chargers are accustomed to playoff football, and they have seven football state championships to their name. Last season, they fell one game short of vying for another championship, but head coach Brett Bogert says that he is excited about what this year’s squad will do. “We will need to replace a few key seniors from the 2021 campaign on both sides of the ball,” he said. “On offense, we return seven starters. For the first time in my coaching career, we return 4 starters on the offensive line, and they will all be juniors. That, along with an experienced backfield and wide receiver core, will help settle our new quarterback, Andy Bass.” The offense that Bass (6-0, 200, Jr.) will lead includes powerful running back River Faulkner (5-10, 205, Sr.), who rushed for 1,146 yards and twenty-two touchdowns a year ago. The duo of Orie Walker (6-3, 192, Sr.) and Liam Burton (5-11, 194, Sr.) will work on the outside and serve as targets for Bass. They combined for 844 yards and eight touchdowns last season. Another solid skill player for the Chargers will be tight end Cooper Cookson (6-1, 202, Sr.). He ended his junior season with nineteen catches for 400 yards and three scores. He will also serve as a run blocker for the running backs. Zavier Freeman (6-1, 230, Jr.) will play at left guard and anchor things on the front line.

DEFENSE

Bogers says that his defensive squad will have some work to do and holes to fill, but they will have to be ready for game one. “On defense, we return six starters and four key rotational players from 2021. We will have to replace four very physical defenders, two of which anchored the defensive line. We will have a very challenging non-district schedule to help us prepare for some new faces, as we move into District 3A-2.” Cookson, Faulkner, and Zach Fetrow (6-0, 195, Sr.) will head up the defense at linebacker. Last season, the trio registered 311 tackles, forty-four tackles for loss, and fourteen sacks and they are expected to continue that work into this season. Defensive end Freeman had fifty-one tackles, nine tackles for loss, and six sacks last year. In the secondary, Walker will play strong safety and free safety after totaling forty tackles, one sack, and two interceptions last season. Joining him will be cornerback Jordyn Harris (6-0, 174, Jr.), who had fifteen tackles, two sacks, and the biggest stat would be not allowing any touchdowns. Assistant coaches for the Chargers this season will be Andy Bogert, Mark Adams, Kyle Gillum, Jason Freeman, Ted Perry, Ryan Johnson, Russ Koch, Xavier Freeman, Chandler Shapard, and Blake Adams.
