Jones Longhorn Football Preview – Presented By BancFirst

KEVIN WITT

8-4

OFFENSE

The Jones Longhorns and head coach Kevin Witt are excited to see how youthful talent mixes with veteran leadership in 2022. “We are a relatively inexperienced team with a lot of young talent that is ready to prove what they can do,” Witt said. Quarterback Clayton Creasey (6-1, 185, Jr.) will be taking over the offense. He’s surrounded by a lot of talent at the skill positions. Wide receivers Braydon Scott (5-10, 165, Jr.) and Mason Weir (5-10, 150, Jr.) will be the most experienced and leading a group of young talent at the position, including Mason Templeton (5-10, 165, So.). Chase Pitts (5-10, 150, So.) will be in the rotation of running backs that can get the job done for the Longhorns. Up front, three year starter Ty Young (6-1, 205, Sr.) returns after becoming the leader of a veteran offensive line in 2021 and Witt expects that to continue in 2022. The Longhorns want to control the tempo in 2022 and will run multiple formations and bring a balanced attack to the field this year.

DEFENSE

With four returning starters on defense the Longhorns will be moving back to a 3-4 formation. Witt has a philosophy for this year’s defense: play fast, play physical, and keep things simple. Big bodied down lineman Kameron Estrada (6-3, 285, Sr.) and Braydon Diamond (6-3, 220, Jr.) are a duo to be reckoned with and wreak havoc on offensive lines. Estrada, a big presence in the middle of the defense, is making the move from defensive end to nose guard in 2022 to fit the Longhorn’s 3-4 formation. Weiher and Scott will be called upon to play on both sides of the ball, appearing in coverage and utilizing their great hands and vision to force turnovers. Linebackers Cruse Cranford (5-10, 190, So.) Mason Cruz (5-11, 200, Sr.) and underclassman Luke DeBusk look to bring pressure, provide containment, and limit big plays. “In 2022 there will be a lot of new faces, but the expectations are high,” Witt said.
