JASON SEXTON
4-7
DEFENSE
Coming off back-to-back playoff appearances, Shawnee head coach Jason Sexton knows the Wolves could see some growing pains this year. Sexton says Shawnee is young with only four seniors on the squad, but he is excited about this young group saying they have great attitudes and a good work ethic. Several sophomores saw significant time last season on both sides of the ball and will be asked to step into bigger roles this year. Offensively, running back Landon Davis-Barkus (6-1, 212, Sr.) will be asked to fill a bigger role. He had 579 yards on the ground and three touchdowns last year. Wide receiver Ren Carter (6-1, 178, Sr.) is a long athlete that flashed last year and will be asked to step up more on the offensive side of the ball. Other guys that could see expanded roles on the offensive side of the ball include Jamir Owens (5-10, 160, So.), J.J. McLain (6-1, 220, So.), and Deetrick Beavers (5-6, 126, So.).
DEFENSE
Like the offense, the defense only returns two starters, and its success will rely on young guys stepping up and making plays. The Wolves will employ multiple looks as they try to keep opposing offenses off balance. Landon Davis-Barkus will the defense from his hybrid linebacker/safety position. He finished second on the team last year with 111 tackles and 14 sacks a season ago. Sexton praised Davis-Barkus for his work ethic and leadership. Sexton says Davis-Barkus is stronger this year and in amazing shape. Ren Carter returns to the defensive backfield after recording 21 tackles and six pass breakups last year. Up front, Nalyshua Perez (5-9, 262, Sr.) will anchor the defensive line. Perez, who finished is also top powerlifter, registered 41 tackles and four sacks a season ago.
