Yukon’s Kyla Davis – Canadian Valley Area Athlete Spotlight – Presented by BancFirst

By Derrick Smith

Success is something that everyone strives for and high school athletes are no different. In order to be competitive in their sport, they have to put in hours of work. Kyla Davis says that her love for pole vaulting helps keep her on track.

“Being successful in pole vaulting takes a good amount of commitment and hard work,” she said. “I train and practice all year round. I have a love for this sport that keeps me going and I never get bored of it. It has taken a lot of time and effort to be where I am today.”

Davis attends Yukon High School, where she is in her senior year. She says if it was not for her coach, she definitely would not be where she is today.

“I am so thankful for coach Zimmermann,” she said. “He stopped me in the hall during my seventh-grade year and told me I needed to try out. Without that moment I most likely would never have tried out the track and be where I am today.”

There are a couple of people that have been Kyla’s biggest influences and supporters since day one.
“My parents are major role models in my life,” she said. “They support me and help keep me going. They always make sure there is a smile on my face. I want to be that person for others as well.”

Throughout her career, Davis has enjoyed some great experiences, but she says that there are a couple of moments that stand out as her favorite.

“The highlight moment for me would be winning the state championship my sophomore year,” she said. “That same year, I also beat the state meet record and also got to be a part of my schools’ academic state championship.”

Other than sports, Kyla is also a member of the National Honors Society, which she says gives her the ability to reach out to others, volunteer, and do some really cool things. After graduation, Davis will be attending Pittsburg State University to be a student-athlete in track and field.
