John Marshall Bears Football Preview – Presented By Rhonda Littleton of Shelter Insurance

CHRIS BERUS

3-7

OFFENSE

Entering his first season at John Marshall, new head Chris Berus’s goals are for his team to stay focused on the moment and improve daily throughout the season. Offensively, three starters return for the Bears. Berus says his offense will use a mix of 10 and 11 personnel and will try to get the ball in the hands of his playmakers. Davien Taylor (6-2, 200, Jr.) is a big-bodied athlete that looks to make the transition to QB after spending his first two years as a wide receiver. Helping Taylor make that transition is a trio of talented pass catchers. Receiver Dorien Middleton (5-9, 170, Sr.) made a big impact last year in limited playing time. Kylin Drennon (5-9, 180, Sr.) will look to have a bigger impact offensively this season, after spending most of last season on defense. Berus says both Middleton and Drennon are highly skilled players with a tremendous work ethic. Berus also says both guys will perform many roles for the Bears. Aahmad Kirby (6-0, 200, So.) might be young, but he is expected to make an impact as a tight end for the Bears. Up front Aalijah Kirby (5-10, 250, Sr.) and Angel DeLeaon (5-10, 210, Sr.) will look to anchor the offensive line.

DEFENSE

The Bears will use a 3-4 defense as their base. Berus wants to see his defense align properly, trust their keys, and chase the football. Crayden Sandersfield (6-2, 220, Sr.) will look to make plays in the backfield from his defensive line position. Berus says Sandersfield is quiet and unassuming but does everything with great intention and always has a great attitude. Joining Sanderfield up front are Tre’Quan Johnson (6-2, 280, Jr.) and Alante Benford (6-0, 220, Sr.). Linebackers Shazdon Guliford (5-8, 190, Sr.), Sean Powell (5-9, 185, So.), and Terrance Caldwell (5-9, 175, Jr.) will look get after the quarterback and provide that second line of defense for the Bears. One underclassman to watch is sophomore receiver James Allen. Berus says Allen is humble and gifted athlete that is just coming into his own.
