Mustang’s Abby Cornelius – Athlete Spotlight – Presented By BancFirst Mustang

By Derrick Smith

Role models are an important part of a young athletes life. They serve as someone for the athlete to look up to and model their life after. Abby Cornelius has a couple role models that have helped shape her into the person and athlete that she is today.

“The biggest influences on my life would have to be my parents,” she said. “I have never met more hard working and supportive people. They have never missed a game I’ve cheered at, or any competition I’ve competed at. They work to give me everything I could ever want and more. I could not ask for better parents or role models.”

Abby is a senior at Mustang High School, where she is a member of the varsity cheer team. Along with cheering for the Bronchos, Cornelius is also a part of a competitive cheer team and that is where she experienced the highlight moment of her career so far.

“My favorite memory of my cheer career has been winning at National Cheer Association and Summit with my competitive team in earlier this year,” she recalled. “It felt great to see all of our hard work pay off.”

Cornelius enjoys cheering and she also says that her teammates make being a part of the cheer team so much more enjoyable.

“I really enjoy being a part of the Mustang High School cheer team because I get to build relationships with all my teammates, give back to my community by cheering for others, and compete at state level competitions.”

As a student at Mustang, Abby has sat through numerous lessons from all of her teachers. But she says that there is one teacher that made a big impact on her life.

“Mr. Evans would have to be my favorite teacher,” she said. “When I wanted to give up he reassured me I was not dumb and I could understand any concept I wanted.”

Away from sports, Abby is also a member of REACH, the National Honor Society, and a member of the athletic counsel.

Abby follows a lot of people on social media but says that there is one follow that she likes the most.

“I really enjoy following Emma Topp because she travels for a living, and that’s the dream for me.”
