Newcastle Football Character Counts – Kayden Phillips – Presented by Landers Auto Group

Senior cornerback for the Newcastle Racers, Kayden Phillips, began playing football at five years old. Over the years Phillips has always enjoyed the competition of the sport and has had fun while doing so. Now as a senior Phillips is looked upon to bring leadership and his veteran presence to the Racers.

“A quality I try to bring to the team is great leadership and the correct work ethic,” Phillips said. “My main priority is to lead by example and set the standard.”

This season is going well for Newcastle thus far. As the team continues through district play Phillips and the Racers are looking to lock up a spot in the Class 4A playoffs.

“We are currently claiming a spot for playoffs and we’re beyond ready ro make a run for the gold ball,” Phillips said.

Phillips is hopeful to end his career with Newcastle on a high note. He has had some memorable moments with the Racers and is hoping that this season tops them all. However, his favorite memory so far occurred his sophomore year.

“Our 41-40 win over Cache when we were down by 21 points with 1:30 left in the 4th quarter,” Phillips said. “After scoring a touchdown and getting back to back onside kicks we defied all odds and proved that anything is possible. It’s a memory I’ll never forget and the true definition to never give up.”

Off the field Phillips often turns to his family for support. He is thankful for his parents for the role they have played in his upbringing and helping shape him into the person he is today.

“Someone that inspires me is my father,” Phillips said. “He was always my coach growing up and saw my potential in me from day one. He teaches me how to play with confidence and be the best player I can be for myself and my team.”

After high school Phillips plans to further his education and study kinesiology. He’s currently deciding between the University of Central Oklahoma and Southwestern Oklahoma State University.
