Prague Red Devils 2023 Football Team Preview – Presented by Natalie Arnett – State Farm

PRAGUE RED DEVILS

Coach: RAFE WATKINS

10-2

OFFENSE

The Red Devils ended last season in the second round of the Class 2A playoffs with a 10-2 final record. But even with such a successful season, as head coach Rafe Watkins begins his second season of the Prague football program, is excited about the experience he has coming back and what they will be able to do. “We have a really good nucleus coming back from last year’s 10-2 team,” he said. “We have several starters plus our kicker and punter returning. If we can stay healthy, I believe we will be competing for a playoff spot if not a possible district title spot.” Aiden Auld (5-11, 165, Sr.) and Rex Geiser (6-0, 180, Sr.) both saw time at quarterback for the Red Devils last season and they are expected to continue that this season. They combined for 1,305 passing yards and 15 touchdowns and 1,577 rushing yards with 22 touchdowns. A trio of receivers, Joe Fixico (6-1, 175, Sr.), J’ohn Friend (6-1, 170, Sr.), and Brad Pickard (5-9, 160, Sr.) played hard last season and will look to be targeted by the quarterback this season. As a group, they tallied 966 receiving yards and sixteen touchdowns. Grant McGinnis (6-0, 185, Jr.) rushed for 308 yards and three touchdowns last year and he hopes to be a key skill player this year.

DEFENSE

On the defensive side of the ball, linebacker will be a key position for the Red Devils. Ronan Martin (5-9, 185, Jr.) had 123 tackles, eight sacks, and two fumble recoveries for scores last season, while Ryan Hedge (6-0, 200, Sr.) tallied 85 tackles, five sacks, and a fumble recovery. Also playing linebacker is Fixico, who registered 61 tackles, three sacks, three interceptions, and two fumble recoveries. McGinnis will line up at defensive end after accumulating 61 tackles, seven sacks, and two fumble recoveries. In the secondary, Pickard and Auld will maintain things and keep the opposing wide receivers at bay. Last season saw them combine for 100 tackles and three interceptions and they hope to increase those numbers this season.
