The Sabercats of Southmoore High School come into the season with a renewed passion for the game thanks to the efforts of coach Jake Monden and his staff. Players like junior Kai Hooks are excited to take the field, represent Southmoore High and play hard.
Hooks is a starter on the offensive line and can play guard or tackle. Last season he graded out at 82 percent in just six games. At 6-foot-3, 275-pounds Hooks is a force upfront and someone the Sabercats will lean on this season. For Hooks, playing for Southmoore has been a great experience.
“Southmoore is the perfect place to excel as a student-athlete. The coaches always prioritize how to make you the best player you can be. The schools’ academics are also amazing and put its students in the best position possible to succeed after high school,” said Hooks.
Growing up playing baseball, Hooks said he always loved playing football with friends.
When he entered the sixth grade, Hooks put the pads on and never looked back.
Today the junior is not only a starter on the varsity football team, he’s also a member of National Honor Society and enjoys his classes at Southmoore High.
“My favorite subject and teacher are math and Ms. Hurt. I would like to major in financing in college,” said Hooks.
As for the team, Hooks said there are many things about this group that he loves.
“The atmosphere that the new coaching staff has brought the last two seasons. To see the improvement our entire team made this offseason. The attention to detail that this group has. Cale Hornbeck (OL) and Skylar Mayer are some of the most dynamic players on our team. I want our class to be known as the class that helped build the Southmoore football program,” said Hooks.
