At the Newcastle vs Blanchard football game, Blanchard’s Principal Greg Jackson was presented a check for Science and Math education at Blanchard High School by the people of Oklahoma Oil & Natural Gas.
One of the teachers who will benefit from this donation is Amy Lasater who teaches Chemistry, AP Chem, Physics, Anatomy and Physiology at Blanchard High.
Tell us a little bit about yourself. Your hobbies, your passions.
I have been teaching for the past 15 years, I am a mother to 3 girls and a wife. I am passionate about my faith, my family and my students. I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, reading and watching movies.
What classes do you teach?
Chemistry, AP Chem, Physics, Anatomy and Physiology, and I am the Varsity Pom coach.
Where did you go to college and what led you into teaching?
I received my teaching degree at USAO (The University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma). My husband’s family has a longline of teachers. One day my father in-law asked me why don’t you be a teacher? I laughed in his face, (I was pursuing the medical field at the time). After my oldest daughter came along, I went to USAO, got my degree in Science and Education and have never looked back.
Who mentored you into the educator you are today?
I have worked with many phenomenal teachers, but I would have to say my Mother-In-Law, Gina Lasater (who taught for 36 years) was probably the most influential mentor when I was new to the game. One other person that helped keep me grounded was Diana Caldwell. These two women were and still are always there for me.
What do you love about teaching?
My absolute favorite part of teaching is when I get to physically watch the joy of the “lightbulb” turning on; and witness my students being proud of themselves when they understand a concept being taught.
What is great about your current school?
The greatest thing about Blanchard High School is the support and love from the staff and students, it still has that small town feel. We cheer on everybody from football, pom, cheer, special olympics, basketball etc.
Why is teaching Science and Math important?
Science and Math are both fundamental skills that students will use for the rest of their lives, whether it may be in a professional setting or in a casual setting, math and science are always around us. Being a science teacher, I believe that I have helped mold the students of today to prepare for tomorrow.
