Shaylin Compton, an 11th-grade student at Moore High School, is making her mark in the world of sports and education. She plays softball, basketball, and runs track.
“My proudest memory is when we made it to state last year and beat the number 1 seed first round,” Compton said. “It was an experience I will never forget.”
In the world of softball, Compton has learned an important life lesson: “Softball is a game of failure, and everyone will have good and bad days.” This perspective has not only helped her on the field but also in life, where resilience is a valuable trait.
Reflecting on her favorite teacher, Compton fondly remembers Mr. Petete, her 7th-grade teacher in junior high. “He always picked on me in class, and we always made jokes together,” she said.
Inspiration comes in many forms, and for Compton, it’s her best friend Libby Jaques who serves as a constant source of motivation. “My best friend Libby inspires me because she pushes me to my best ability,” Compton affirms, underlining the importance of having a supportive friend. But the inspiration doesn’t stop there. Compton finds motivation in her teammates as well. “All of my teammates inspire me because we work together as a team to create a family,” she shared.
Compton’s versatility on the field sets her apart. “I believe I’m a little different because you don’t see many slappers being a catcher in the sport of fastpitch,” she proudly states, demonstrating her unique skills in the game.
One valuable piece of advice Shaylin holds dear is the notion that “it’s okay to make mistakes.”
This mindset has allowed her to learn and grow from every experience, both in sports and life. In addition to her achievements in softball, Compton is actively involved in other sports like basketball and track.
As Compton continues to excel in sports and academics, she expresses her gratitude “I just wanted to say thank you to my parents and coaches for pushing me to where I am today,” Compton said. “I appreciate them making me a better player and person.”
