Mustang’s Katie Smith – Mom of the Month – Presented By Guarantee Abstract Co.

By Derrick Smith

Parents have numerous things that they have to instill in their children. They not only teach them things but they also help them learn how to prioritize the things that they are involved in. Katie Smith is a mother of three kids that are involved in athletics, but she makes sure that they know what comes first.

“Academics is the most important,” she said. “Both of my high school kids have 4.0 GPA’s and are in the National Honor Society. Sports has always been a part of our family and we have always been a part of it.”

Smith graduated from Edmond Santa Fe high school, where she played basketball. She set a school record for most three pointers in a game with eight. Her three kids received some of their mom’s love for competing in sports. All three attend Mustang Public Schools and are all three involved in athletics.

“Keegan Bass is a junior,” she said. “He plays football and basketball. Kamryn Bass is a sophomore and plays basketball and is also a member of the honor choir. My youngest, Khloe, is in the fourth grade and plays basketball. I am very proud of all three of my kids.”

Katie keeps her hand in sports as she is the head girls basketball coach at Mustang high school. When she is not coaching, she enjoys spending time with her family.

As a coach and a mother, Smith stays as involved as she can in her kid’s sports.

“I coach my daughter but she tore her ACL a few weeks ago, so she will be out for a while,” she said. “My son starts for the basketball and football teams. It’s nice coaching at the school. I see them every day and love supporting them.”

Raising her kids in this community is something that gives Katie the most comfort and peace.

“Mustang is the best community to be a part of,” she said. “The support we receive as a family is amazing. I have coached at different places but Mustang is the best so far. I love my athletic directors and fellow coaches we all look out for what is best for the overall athlete.”
