Yukon Millers Basketball Team Previews

BOYS

Coach: Kevin Ritter

20-21 Record: 5-9

Head coach Kevin Ritter is looking to place players in positions for them to be successful on the court this season. “We are looking to combine two varsity players from last year with a mix of newcomers as well as returning role players from last season. The key for us this season is working together as a team to utilize the various talents we have this season,” said Ritter. Three-year starter Brayden Dutton (6-1, Sr.) averaged 10 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game last season. He is the starting quarterback on the football team and a natural leader. Jaelyn Newman (6-0, Sr.) is another multi-sport athlete who brings leadership to the floor for coach Ritter. Newman is returning from an injury and is expected to have a big year. Damontrell Adams (5-11, Jr.) saw action last season and is the best free throw shooter on the team at 100 percent. He can create off the dribble as well. Lyndon Cox (6-0, Sr.) is a catch and shoot player while Dylan Snow (5-9, So.) does a little bit of everything for the Millers. Snow is called a “sneaky good athlete.” Kaden Morey (6-6, Jr.) has good size and skill for a big man. Also a football player for the Millers. Sam Johansen (6-5, Jr.) is another big man coming from the football team coach Ritter will use in many ways. David Varela (6-4, Sr.) is a combo wing/forward player while Ethan Holliday (6-0, So.) can shoot off the dribble. Also look for Cooper Hutchens (6-3, Jr.) who is new to the program who coach Ritter calls a good, “pick and pop player.”

GIRLS

Coach: Roy Wyckoff

20-21 Record: 9-10

Having a good mix of experience and talent can help shape a team into a real contender. Head coach Roy Wyckoff has that type of mix at Yukon. “This year’s team will have a good combination of experience and youth,” said coach Wyckoff. “We are returning three starters off an Area qualifying team. This team will look to pressure people defensively and spread the floor and play up-tempo on offense.” Gabby Tilley (5-7, So.) was the COAC Freshman of the Year last season. She returns as the Millerettes top scorer and one of the purest shooters in the state. Caid Jefferson (5-4, So.) led the team in rebounding and assists as a freshman. Nariyah Parks (5-4, Sr.) is the sparkplug on defense. She is one of the top defenders in the state and has worked hard this offseason on her offensive skill set. Madyson Richards (5-4, So.) is a dynamic guard with great vision and ball handling skills. Ashley Cox (5-8, Fr.) can score on all three levels. This freshman will make an impact this season. Avery Sims (5-8, Jr.) is a physical player and a vocal leader for the Millerettes. Lydia Laverty (5-7, Jr.) has the ability to finish on either side of the rim. Lailah McGee (5-6, So.) has a high basketball IQ and someone who brings a lot of quickness to the floor. Other players to watch include Ruby Barker (5-4, Jr.), Maggie Scott (5-8, Sr.), Audrey Boyd (5-6, Sr.), Abby Rawlings (6-0, Sr.) and Rena Henson (5-6, Jr.). As this team continues to mature and develop their ceiling continues to climb. Coach Wyckoff may have the right combination for a successful season this year and years to come.
