Athletes invest a lot so that they can be at their best when they step out on the field or court to compete. Kinley Duehning knows that along with the work, you have to have the desire to compete as well.
“Being successful takes hard work and dedication, doing the little things even when no one is watching,” she said. “Loving your sport is different than playing a sport, it means nothing if you don’t want to be doing it.”
A junior at Guthrie High School, Kinley plays both softball and basketball for the Blue Jays. Away from sports, she is also a member of the Drama Club.
Kinley enjoys playing sports, not just because she likes to compete, but also because she is proud to represent her school and community.
“It means so much to play for Guthrie,” she said. “I like being a role model to the little girls that come just to watch us. I remember when I was young and came to watch the games because my sister played, it helped me get into the sport and I want to set a good example. Also for the alumni to come back and see Guthrie softball is still doing as good as it was and better, when they were here.”
Throughout her life, there have been a lot of people that have helped Duehning become a better person and player.
“God, my family, and my coaches keep me going and push me to be better,” she said. “Paige Parker and Kelly Barnhill are two role models in my life. I grew up watching them on the TV and in person. They set a great example to never give up and keep shining when it gets hard, and also stay calm in tough situations. A teacher that has been influential in my life is Kim Hinkle. She got me into church at a young age and told me to never give up, she could see my potential.”
Her teammates are also working hard to help the team be successful. Kinley says that there are a couple that she respects a lot.
“McKenna Tucker is the teammate I enjoy working against the most in practice,” she said. “She gives 100% and makes practice very fun and it is exciting to match her energy in practice. We both pitch so we go back and forth joking about playing time and humorous trash talk. Ryann Waters is a very hard worker and never gives up. She deserves more opportunities to prove herself.”
Throughout her career, Duehning has made a lot of memories, but she says that there are a couple that stand out as her favorite.
“Pitching all ten innings and getting the win against Tahlequah in state last year is definitely one of my favorite memories,” she recalled. “Also being district pitcher of the year two years in a row.”
