Choctaw’s Caleb Miller – Army National Guard Spotlight

Growing up with a father who served in the military planted the seed for Caleb Miller to follow in his father’s footsteps.

“I’ve always wanted to join the military and serve my country and help people as well. Looking at my dad as a kid, I wanted to grow up to be like him one day and so my enlistment process started in June of 2021, but because of my medical history I did not actually enlist until September 1st. I joined the Oklahoma National Guard because I love this state and helping and protecting people is what I want to do. It’s always been who I am and that’s why I want to become a police officer on the civilian side,” said Miller.

Miller’s father served 19 years in the U.S. Army until his retirement and his grandparents and great grandparents served during the Korean War and Vietnam.

Miller said the recruiting process was easy to get through.

“My recruiting process was pretty easy because of my recruiter, SFC Honick, who helped me and worked his butt off to get me in and I would recommend him to anyone because of how helpful and easy to work with he is,” said Miller.

While serving in the Oklahoma National Guard, Miller will learn to work on the UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter, but he also plans to use the education benefits he will receive as an enlisted member of the Guard.

“I am planning on using my education benefits at the University of Central Oklahoma so I can pursue a degree in criminal justice,” said Miller. “I leave for basic training in July at Fort Jackson and then from there I leave for AIT (Advanced Individual Training) at Fort Eustis. What I love most about serving is just the people and how free our country is. I love being free and being able to call myself an American. I feel like I have to protect that for people as well.”

As a student at Choctaw High School, Miller was involved in many activities including football and later he became a student coach. In his free time Miller said he enjoys working out and spending time with his friends and family.
