Jones’ Creighton Jones – Athlete Spotlight – Presented By Blue & Gold Sausage

Creighton Jones is a sophomore at Jones High School and multi-sport athlete for the Longhorns. In the fall Jones plays free safety on the football team and in the spring runs track and competes in the 400m and 4×4 relay. Currently, Jones is in the middle of basketball season where he and the Longhorns have been working hard and competing throughout the season.

Jones first began playing basketball when he was in kindergarten and has had a love for the game ever since. Although he loves the competition that the sport provides, he also appreciates the camaraderie that comes with the game.

“My favorite thing about being on a team is building a bond with my team,” Jones said.

When it comes to teamwork, Jones looks for specific leadership qualities from himself and teammates both on and off the court.

“The best characteristic about a leader, in my opinion, is accountability,” Jones said. “Whether that is holding themselves accountable or holding others accountable.”

As the season progresses Jones hopes he and the Longhorns can make a push toward postseason play. While only a sophomore, Jones had made significant contributions on the court this season. Standing at 6-4, Jones has the height and skillset to match up with most opponents from the backcourt to the post. He can handle the ball well, find open teammates, and shoot the ball at an efficient rate. However, he has been working hard every day to expand his game.

“I think I excel the most at play making and finding the open man,” Jones said. “I have been trying to build up my shot off the dribble.”

Jones appreciates the support he has received from his family, friends, and school in the community and looks forward to competing hard over the next several years. Jones said that Longhorn head basketball coach Derek Verner gave him some advice that he will carry with him as he continues on with his career.

“The best advice I have received is from coach Verner and it was to never lose confidence,” Jones said. “Whether that’s for my shot or just how I play in general.”
