Jones Longhorns Boys Basketball Preview – Presented By BancFirst

The Longhorns will have a lot of new faces on the court this season. They return one varsity starter from last season and they lost eight of their top nine players from a year ago. In spite of having a lot of new players, head coach Derek Verner looks for his squad to build off of last season’s success. “Even though we lost a lot, this team has the ability to lock teams down defensively and score at a high rate,” Verner said. “The team is extremely balanced and unselfish and I look forward to seeing what we can do.” Leading the team this season will be Spencer Davis (6-3, Sr.). He is the point

guard and has a great court vision as well as the ability to get to the basket whenever he wants. Spencer is also an outstanding defender and will always guard the opponents best ball handler. He averaged close to two steals a game as a junior and is a player that would fit into any team. Another prime-time player for the Longhorns this season will be Mason Turner (5-11, Sr.). He is a lockdown defender and the vocal leader of the team. He is a guy that will not light up the stats but everything works better when he is in. Mason is also the one who holds the other guys accountable and will be there to pick them up when they are down. Creighton Jones (6-4, So.) will be a big contributor as a sophomore this year. He is six-foot-four with the ability to run the point as well as guard and play the five. Michael Gaul (5-7, Jr.) is undersized but plays big. He holds his teammates accountable and hustles everywhere on the floor. He makes a lot of plays just by his effort and forces everyone to play to his energy. Other Longhorns to keep an eye on this season are Brinlee Sanders (6-1, Jr.), Austin Beverly (6-0, Sr.), Luke DeBusk (6-1, Fr.), Gage Jack (6-3, Jr.), Jayden Nathan (5-8, Jr.), and Acyn Hanson (5-7, Fr.). Assistant coaches this season are Dillian Brunk and Jason Moore.
