Midwest City Bombers 2023 Football Team Preview – Presented By Candace Cunningham – Shelter Insurance

MIDWEST CITY BOMBERS
Coach: Darrell Hall
8-3
OFFENSE
After an eight-win campaign in which the Bombers claimed the District 5A-1 crown,
Midwest City football returns an experienced crew on both sides of the ball. Six offensive starters return, including Kenneth Colston (6-0, 180, Sr.), who will make the transition from receiver to quarterback after he caught 14 passes for 284 yards and a trio of touchdowns as a junior. Devin Simmons (6-0, 175, Sr.) will be a go-to target for Colston after coming down with a few crucial catches last year. In the backfield, the tandem of Derrion Rogers (5-11, 183, Sr.) and Lasiera Laviolette (5-8, 160, Sr.) will be taking most of the handoffs after they combined for 11 touchdowns last year. Rogers has been recruited by Division I schools like Tulsa and Central Arkansas. The Bombers bring back a particularly advanced crew up front with three offensive lineman who graded north of 75 percent last year, including tackle Jacob Brunson (6-5, 340, Sr.), another Division I recruit, and center Avant Curry (5-11, 203, Sr.).

DEFENSE
Another six starters come back for the Midwest City defense, including many of the same offensive contributors. The defensive line, led by Brunson and his walloping stature, has experience and talent, with other players like Damarion Jones (6-2, 266, Jr.) bringing their skills to the unit. In the linebacking corps, Rogers and Laviolette could be equally as productive as they are on the offensive side of the ball this season. Rogers accounted for 57 tackles, including six for losses, while Laviolette made 22 tackles and caught a pair of interceptions last year. Aiden Johnson-Tollison (6-3, 204, Jr.) will bring his talents to the group after a big sophomore year where he made 33 tackles and a pair of sacks. Jaylan Woody (5-9, 185, Jr.) will be expected to step up as a leader within Midwest City’s secondary after he made 41 tackles and caught a puck last year, while other contributing defensive backs like Qaylin Pennon (6-0, 175, Jr.) and Josiah Johnson (5-10, 170, Jr.) will have inflated roles.
