Q&A with Midwest City’s De’yanna Douglas – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by RibCrib

By: Hunter Ferguson

Midwest City basketball player De’yanna Douglas recently completed an interview with VYPE.

VYPE: What are your personal goals for the year?

This year I given myself the goal to be overall a more positive and forward person in my community, being from Crutcho elementary no one believes I had came from their because of the stigma that comes from going there, your automatically labeled as a bad kid or incompetent when I showed nothing but the opposite and always have that is why I strive to be someone that younger kids can look up too and know that they too can do great things no matter what neighborhood or family you come from.

VYPE: What is your favorite athletic memory?

My favorite athlete memory would have to be our recent trip to play at Guymon, even though the trip was long being with the people that I consider my family made it easier, we played uno in true family fashion and sung songs together which makes that trip something I’ll never forget.

VYPE: What teammate has left the biggest impression on you and why?

I have so many teammates that have left everlasting impressions on me, I’ve been playing Aau highschool since I’ve been in 7th grade and everyone of those girls took care of that scared 7th grader who was traveling without her mom for the first time like their own and I’ll always be grateful for having such loveable and determined girls in my life, Jordan, Cheyenne, Willow, Aj, looney, we’re all girls that individually taught me a life lesson unknowingly and I’ve carried a part of them with me everyday since then and I’ll forever appreciate them.

VYPE: What is your favorite part of being on this team?

My favorite part about being on my team is the amount of love we have for each other, it’s like having an endless amount of sisters we may have our ups and downs but at the end of the day I know they have my back and are there for me no matter what, it’s gonna be bittersweet when I play my last game with these ladies.

VYPE: Do you participate in any community service projects?

I absolutely help out around my community whenever I can, being in national honor society has helped me tremendously with showing Appreciation for the community I live in and to help give back towards it.

VYPE: What Clubs or Campus groups are you involved with and why?

As mentioned before, I am in the NHS, and Student council. I really like to participate at the other sports games so being in student council I try to get other people to go to the games and just support because I love when people support me so I try to share that same feeling.

VYPE: What has your sport taught you that you use in your daily life?

My sport has taught me patience overall that’s the best lesson I’ve ever gotten if any, when I was younger it was about being patient because I wasn’t as good as some of the other girls and I had to wait my turn whereas now it’s about being patient with the game everything happens for a reason so I just have to trust god and handle what I know I can!

VYPE: What is the best advice that anyone has given you?

The best advice I’ve ever gotten was from my dear friend Trinn: don’t let people that don’t align within your lifestyle affect the outcome. I’m guilty of letting people affect me when I shouldn’t because emotionally I tend to care way too much when in reality at the end of the day nothing really matters as long as you and those close to you are taken care of happy that’s all you really have to worry about.

VYPE: Who inspires you and why?

My mom and grandpa has been a huge inspiration for me throughout my whole life, no matter what they’ve always been there for me whether that be at my first little League game or my senior night they always support me and always will, my mom raised me as a single parent with help from my grandparents and every memory I have they are always their smiling and making sure me and my sisters are okay at the end of the day regardless of the next bill due or if we’ll have something to eat next week they were always there never letting us know just how stressful it got and for that I’ll always look up to them and aspire to be everything they are and more so that one day I can take care of them!

VYPE: Here is your chance to give a shoutout or say thank you to anyone you wish.

And for shoutouts all of my friends and family because without them I would be the woman I am today without their love and support!
