Norman North Slow-Pitch

Head coach: Laura Collins

Any coach will tell you the success of the team has a lot to do with the players buying in to the program and devoting themselves to a culture of winning. For head coach Laura Collins, having a young team has its own challenges, but it’s an opportunity to mold the players and develop talent as they learn the program and get comfortable with winning.

“This team has really bought in to help change the culture of Norman North softball. We are still young but show a huge upside. We have power and speed throughout the lineup and players able to play multiple positions. Our best asset is our ability to work hard on the field and have fun together off the field. We have really made huge strides over the past year, and I am excited to see how they develop even further as this season continues,” said Collins.

One of those young standout players is August Grove (So.). Grove can play infield or outfield with tremendous range at both positions. Coach Collins said Grove has played multiple positions this season.

“She is one of our best outfielders with lots of range and a strong arm. She has also filled in and done well in several infield positions. What stands out the most is the power she’s discovered at the plate. She consistently hits the ball hard and far and has multiple homeruns on the year bringing in several runs.”

One player everyone loves to cheer for is Juliana Linares (Jr.). Linares made the move to shortstop after a teammate suffered an injury in preseason.

“She has really stepped in and done a great job there. She covers a lot of ground and makes great defensive plays. She has been asked to step into a leadership role as our only junior. She has done a great job in that role and really sets an example on and off the field. She has been dedicated to the success of this team since before stepping on campus and that has never wavered. The team is in good hands with this one in the lead,” said Collins.

Grace Jones (So.) is an outfielder and a two-sport athlete. Jones is a high-character player who does everything right. Her contributions to the team are immeasurable. First baseman Carlyn Utley (So.) is a big hitter with a lot of power. Utley is difficult to pitch to and she is only getting better.

Other players to watch include Mackenzie Berglan (So.), Mariah Simpson (Jr.), Brooks Beavers (Fr.), Audrey Loving (So.), Kylie Townsend (So.), Merabelle Neilson (So.), Taylor Hockett (So.), Taylor Gatewood (So.), Gracie Compton (Fr.), and Shalan Tucker (Fr.).
