Head coach Matthew Douglass and the Lady Lions wrestler are ranked No. 1 in 6A heading into the 2022-23 season.
Douglass is excited to see what his team can accomplish this season.
“Girl’s wrestling has been sanctioned in the state of Oklahoma for two years, and the Moore Lady Lions have won the first two west regional titles. We finished fourth as a team at the state tournament and look to improve on that performance,” Douglass said. “We return two state placers in state runner-up, senior Harley Stringer and third place, junior Shelby Kemp.
“We also return two more state qualifiers. We look for sophomore Kylee Smith who returns from injury, and freshman Hannah Lopez to add much needed points at the state tournament.”
Kemp is not only a great athlete in the wrestling room, she is a mentor to the younger wrestlers in the program. On or off the mat, Kemp is a leader for the Lady Lions.
Stringer is a two-time state placer finishing third as a sophomore and was a runner-up as a junior last year.
“We look for her to take that next step and stand on top of the podium her senior year,” Douglass said.
Kylee Smith returns after suffering an injury last season. She is a tough wrestler who enjoyed a lot of success in middle school.
Other wrestlers to watch: Mercadies Miller, Grace Huffman, and Sara Freeman.
