Southmoore Sabercats 2023 Football Team Preview – Presented By Eskridge Honda

SOUTHMOORE SABERCATS

Coach: JAKE MONDEN

1-9

OFFENSE

The Sabercats will base out of multiple personnel and will have “the ability to throw the football” based on opposing defenses’ alignment this season, Southmoore head coach Jake Monden said. Playing with varying tempos to match the game’s pace and producing efficient possessions will be priorities for the Sabercats offense, led by returning quarterback Cruz Campbell (5-11, 170, So.), who threw for 29 touchdowns and only four interceptions last year. He completed over 59 percent of his passes for 2,400 yards in eight games of varsity action as a freshman. Southmoore returns seven offensive starters, including a pair of talented slot backs for Campbell to connect with this fall in Corbin Rodriguez (5-10, 170, So.) and Kasen Rinehart (6-0, 170, Jr.). Both are talented players for Southmoore’s baseball team. Anthony Johnson (6-1, 185, So.), another returning skill player who saw significant time as a freshman, will bring his relentless ball-carrying and elusive speed to Southmoore’s offense. Up front, the Sabercats return a pair of hogs who graded out well last season; as a junior, center Jacob Clay (6-0, 260, Sr.) graded out at 80 percent and Kai Hooks (6-3, 275, Jr.) graded at 82 percent as a sophomore in six games of action.

DEFENSE

Where Southmoore’s offense lacks tenure, its defense will feature multiple veterans, particularly within its dynamic secondary. Safety Skyler Mayer (6-1, 200, Sr.), a three-year starter, is “incredible” when it comes to open field tackling and has “the ability to make plays on the ball in big moments.” He made 73 tackles, caught two interceptions, and broke up six passes last year. At corner, Zephaniah Davison (5-10, 170, Sr.) made 40 tackles and broke up nine passes last year and has since improved his athleticism, Monden said. Defensive end Landen Wilson (6-1, 240, Sr.) recorded 60 total tackles, including 6 for losses last fall. Jacob Carrethers (5-10, 190, Sr.) had 46 tackles and five tackles for loss. One of the lone underclassmen on the defense, Max Beaty (6-3, 210, So.) is expected to have a big year for the Sabercats at linebacker.
