Alyssa Schuerch of Southmoore High School is not your average student-athlete; she’s a testament to dedication both on the field and in the classroom. With a rigorous course load, including AP classes and concurrent enrollment at OCCC, Alyssa embodies the essence of a scholar-athlete, excelling academically while pursuing her passion for soccer.
Her journey in soccer began at the age of seven, inspired by her father’s love for the game. Alyssa’s dad, still active in soccer at 50, instilled in her a profound appreciation for the sport and a relentless drive to improve every day. “My dad always took us to watch him play indoor and outdoor soccer.”
Alyssa draws inspiration from her high school coach, Katy Swartzendruber, and her personal trainer, Matthew Howard, both of whom have played pivotal roles in her development as a player and a person.
Balancing academics and athletics require discipline, and Alyssa prioritizes her studies while maintaining her commitment to soccer. “It’s student before the athlete,” she said, emphasizing the importance of academic excellence in her daily routine.
In the realm of sports, Alyssa’s journey is marked by unforgettable moments, like winning the Southern Coast Cup in Alabama during her sophomore year. These experiences not only showcase her athletic prowess but also strengthen the bonds forged with her teammates.
Navigating the challenges of competition isn’t easy, but Alyssa has learned to overcome setbacks with resilience and mental fortitude. Adopting a “memory of a goldfish” mentality, she focuses on improvement rather than dwelling on mistakes, a mindset that has propelled her forward in her soccer journey.
For Alyssa, being part of a team is more than just playing a game; it’s about camaraderie and family. “It’s the hard times that makes a team great,” she said. “You can’t only think about yourself, you need to think about the team as a whole, like a family.” She values the support and camaraderie of her teammates, understanding that unity and loyalty are the foundations of success both on and off the field.
Looking ahead, Alyssa dreams of playing soccer at Oklahoma City University while pursuing a degree in exercise science and physical therapy. Her ultimate goal? To open her own clinic or athlete gym, empowering young athletes to reach their full potential.
