From Wes Welker to Sterling Shepard to Barry Sanders, Jr to, more recently, Gavin Freeman, Heritage Hall has a history of producing high level talent. This year, running back River Faulkner (5-10, 205, Sr.) appears to be the next in the line of great Chargers. For some, that history might be daunting, but for Faulkner, he welcomes the pressure of being next in line.

“I feel like this year, I’ve come to expect it from myself,” he says. “I’ve taken a higher stance on what I should be for the team. I know where I should be at and I what I expect for myself.” 

An injury kept Faulkner at about 60% at the end of last year, but despite the injury, he still ran for over 1,100 yards and 22 touchdowns. Now fully healthy, Faulkner has set high goals for himself this year.

“I’m going for 2,000,” Faulkner says with a chuckle. “Last year was tough. I started off great and playing the best ball I have and then I tore my groin. I played through it, but it was just hard. I feel great now and I’m in much better shape.”

While Faulkner has his individual goals, it’s the team goals that really drive him. Faulkner’s senior class is the first one at Heritage Hall in a while that doesn’t have a state title and that fact is what is pushing him and his teammates this year.

“It’s been a bit of unfortunate circumstances,” he says. “But we know we have it, and we feel like we’re the best team out there. This year, we’re giving it all we got and I love our chances.”

While Faulkner currently does not hold any scholarship offers, he has taken visits to Division 1 schools and knows a big season by himself and his Chargers could open some opportunities.

“I’ve been held back by injuries,” he admits. “But my senior year is my year to show out. I like the pressure. I’ve always been for it because it brings out the best in me.”
