Edmond Santa Fe Wolves 2023 Football Team Preview – Presented by Danielle Hill – Shelter Insurance

EDMOND SANTA FE WOLVES

Coach: KYLE WHITE

1-9

OFFENSE

Three years after its 2020 appearance in the Class 6A-I state championship game, Santa Fe football has an opportunity to “get back where Santa Fe football belongs” this season, eighth-year head coach Kyle White said. The Wolves dealt with a mixture of injuries and surgeries during the offseason but each of White’s star players has since been cleared. Daniel Newton (6-1, 200, Jr.), who finished third in the 6A state discus throw as a sophomore, will display his big arm as Santa Fe’s quarterback this season. Of its eight returning starters from last season, Kyus Henry (5-10, 180, Sr.) will be the veteran in the receiver’s room. In the backfield, White will employ Joseph Hinton (5-10, 200, Sr.) and Demarius Robinson (5-9, 175, Jr.) to carry the rock with physicality to complement the Wolves’ explosive passing game. A Robinson injury allowed him to only play four games last year, but in his freshman season, the back bruised opposing defenses for over 1,400 yards and 17 touchdowns. Frontmen Josh Aisosa (6-3, 300, Sr.) and Merrick Barnett (6-1, 280, Sr.) will protect the backfield tandem, Newton and all other ball-carriers.

DEFENSE

Santa Fe’s “fast, physical, hard-nosed” defense will base out of a 4-2-5 this year. Seven starters from 2022 will return to the unit. Henry, who caught three picks last year, will play both sides of the ball and, according to White, is a “big-time DB” with “great speed, feet, hips and ball skills.” Rahnel Slaughter (5-9, 175, Jr.) will pair with Henry to headline the Wolves secondary. Will Shoemaker (5-11, 200, Sr.) will anchor the linebacking crew. On the defensive front, Bergin Kysar (6-3, 240, Sr.) brings the most experience to the corps, while Jason Wilson (6-1, 220, Sr.) and Alex Jones (6-1, 270, Sr.) bring gainful experience to the group. Kysar accounted for 43 tackles, 15 quarterback pressures and six sacks last season.
