There are many reasons to be excited for the upcoming wrestling season if you’re a Carl Albert Titans fan.
Coach Curt Hodges has eight reasons, to be exact.
“The team returns seven state qualifiers on the boys side and one returning state girls qualifer. State finalists Kasen Miller, Grant Gober and Nathan Sutterfield lead the 2022-23 squad,” Hodges says. “The Titans have the potential to improve upon their fifth-place finish at the state tournament.”
Gober is coming off a 35-4 junior campaign and was the 2021 5A state champion at 120 pounds his sophomore year. He has twice finished as state runner-up.
Miller, a junior, is a two-time state placer. He finished as runner-up in 2022. Miller will likely wrestle at 138 this season.
Sutterfield, a senior, is a three-time state qualifier who finished the season 37-6 last year at 160. Other returners with state experience include Raylyn Sherman (Sr.), Isaiah Matanane (Sr.), Braden Anderson (Jr.), Brock Johnson (Jr.), and Alex Sutterfield (Sr.).
Hodges says Jackson Mortimer (Fr.) will be an underclassman to watch.
“(Mortimer) has the potential to be in the state tournament at the end of the year and place,” Hodges says. “We feel he can be one of the best at his weight.”
