There are many things that are learned while being a part of an athletic team. Not only do you learn about your specific sport, but you also learn things about yourself as a person. And it is not just the athletes that are learning. Noble High School’s head volleyball coach, Chrissy Marsee, says that she is still learning things as a coach.
“Early in my coaching career, I based my worth solely on the wins and losses,” she said. “The wins were amazing but I struggled with how to handle the losses in a constructive way. I began to develop my knowledge of the mental aspect of competition as well as how to teach that to my athletes. I began to coach from the heart.”
Marsee is in her fifth season as head varsity volleyball coach at Noble, but it is her twelfth season overall in coaching volleyball at Noble after coaching middle school for the first seven years.
Chrissy and her husband, Randy, have three daughters; Dusty, Reily, and Ragan. For Marsee, coaching is similar to parenting.
“I am a mom, a middle school teacher, and a coach both on the court and on the track,” she said. “All of those roles are built on the same foundation as my coaching philosophy which is to train, mentor, and build relationships. As a coach, I am tasked with preparing athletes to be mentally and physically strong as well as equip them with skills to be successful in their sport.”
Throughout her life, Chrissy has had different influences on her life, both as a coach and as a person. But, she says that through it all, there is one person that has made the biggest impact on her life.
“The greatest influence on who I am as a coach is the unconditional love of Christ,” she stated. “That is what motivates me to coach from the heart out. There have been many amazing coaches that have come alongside me, taking the time to teach me higher skill levels. Brandy White is one coach I consider to be my greatest mentor. Her knowledge, love, and passion for the sport of volleyball and the players she coaches are beyond measure. I am forever grateful for the time she has spent pouring into me as a fellow coach.”
