OFFENSE

After winning their first playoff game since 2014, the Shawnee Wolves are hungry for more. Second year head coach Jason Sexton said last year’s success motivated this group to work hard in the offseason and he expects to see that hard work on display every game in 2021. Offensively, Shawnee strives for a balanced attack and will line up in multiple formations to achieve that. Sexton said the Shawnee offense will be modified every year to accentuate the skill sets of that year’s roster and put his players in the best position to succeed. This year’s offense will likely feature a heavy dose of running back Jaylon Orange (5-9, 190, Sr.). A VYPE Top 100 player, Orange will be starting on both sides of the ball for the fourth straight year. He led the Wolves offense last year with 1,600 yards and 22 touchdowns from his running back position. Orange is also a skilled receiver and will field punts and kickoffs as the Wolves look to get the ball in his hands as much as possible. Joining Orange in the backfield is quarterback Karsen Conaway (5-11, 181, Sr.). Sexton praised Conaway for his football IQ saying he knows every offensive player’s job on every play. Helping lead the for this Shawnee offense will be a pair of big bodies up front. Vype 100 player Lane Williams (6-5, 291, Sr.) and Brayden Kirkland (6-2, 271, Sr.) both return as starters for the Wolves offensive line.

DEFENSE

Like the offense, the Shawnee defense will throw multiple formations at opponents. The Wolves will base out of a 4-2-5 but will jump between various three-, four-, and five-man front formations. The key for Sexton’s defense will be pressure and forcing turnovers. He has four returning starters on the defense that will look to do just that. Williams and Kirkland will anchor the defensive line. Kirkland is one of those players every coach loves to have. Sexton says Kirkland is never late and leads the team not just vocally, but through his actions as well. Williams and Kirkland will look to take up blockers and open up rush lanes for middle linebacker Sam Anderson (6-0, 200, Sr.). Anderson tallied 61 tackles, including five tackles for loss, last year for the Wolves. In the defensive backfield, Jaylon Orange returns as the starting free safety. He tallied 71 tackles and four interceptions for the Wolves last year. Along with head coaching duties, Sexton is also Shawnee’s Defensive Coordinator and defensive backs coach. Joining Sexton on the Shawnee coaching staff are Rocky Winkle (Offensive Coordinator), Jack Dingus (OL), Todd McGuire (DL), Darren Dean (WR), Tyler Harrison (H-Back/TE), and Tom Williams (Middle School Coordinator).
