Shawnee’s Lee Thurman – Presented by Army National Guard

Shawnee High School’s Lee Thurman is a member of the swim team and a member of the band. Thurman, like many of his peers, has plans to attend school once he has graduated, but paying for that school is always a concern. For Thurman, joining the
Oklahoma National Guard gave him the opportunity to not only pay for school, but to learn a new skill while serving his state and his country.

“I knew I wanted to join the military when I was young,” said Thurman. “I would also like to pursue more opportunities outside the military. I plan to use the educational benefits and attend Vo-Tech.” Thurman said the recruiting process is not as difficult as some make it out to be. “For me, the recruiting process was swift and easy,” said Thurman. “I have not attended basic training yet but will sometime this summer.”

While serving in the National Guard, Thurman will become an 88 Mike or Motor Transport Operator. As an 88 Mike, Thurman will play an important role as part of the Army’s transportation logistics team. He will supervise and operate wheeled
vehicles over all types of terrain to safely transport cargo, troops, and provide advanced mobility on all missions. Thurman said his family has a history of military service on his mother’s side.

For Thurman, serving his state and country is about being with and working to achieve a collective goal with his fellow soldiers. Thurman said he plans on making
the military a career. He offered some advice to other students who may want to join the military. “Learn as much as you can about the branch and job you want,” said
Thurman.
