Shawnee senior Abigail Looper has played tennis since her freshman year after initially becoming interested following a few private lessons in middle school. For her, being a high school athlete means more than just the sport itself.
“The best part about playing sports in high school would be the friendships you make,” she said. “Coming into Shawnee as a freshman was very nerve wracking for me and I quickly found a solid group once I joined.”
Looper’s favorite memory in her sport so far was when her whole team made it to the second day of state last year. Her coach, John Stobbe, praised her as a leader and hard worker on the team.
“As a senior and returning state qualifier, she leads by quiet example,” said coach Stobbe. “Her work ethic is consistent, and her leadership is understated but effective.”
Looper models her character after someone in particular.
“My Poppy is one of my biggest role models because he was one of the most giving and humble people I’ve had the pleasure of knowing,” she said. “I hope to gain an ounce of his respectability and kindness.”
Outsides of athletics, Looper is very involved at school as a member of National Honor Society, senior class vice president, student council historian, and tri-hi-y member. After high school she plans to attend Oklahoma State University where she will major in business.
