Jacob Kerbo, a high school student at Christian Heritage Academy, has been a stand-out in high school cross country. With a passion for running and a strong foundation in his faith, Kerbo attributes his success to the influence of his favorite coach, Coach Newton, and the unwavering support from his teammates.
According to Kerbo, Coach Newton has been instrumental in his cross country journey. “She has taught me to push myself and encouraged me in my Christian faith,” he said. The guidance from Coach Newton has played a significant role in shaping Kerbo’s approach to the sport and his personal beliefs.
Kerbo finds immense admiration for his fellow senior teammate, Eli Vogler, describing him as “a great leader with a strong voice.” Additionally, he recognizes the support of Hudson Smith, who has pushed both to become better runners. “My teammate Hudson Smith has supported me through my running by pushing himself, which ultimately makes us both better,” Kerbo said.
Preparation and dedication are at the core of Kerbo’s training. “I have been running miles all summer long,” he said. “I joined the Hoka Summer Mile Club as some extra motivation, but my goal is to hit 500 miles before school starts.”
Cross country has taught Kerbo valuable life lessons that he applies daily. “My sport has taught me the discipline to never give up,” he said. He acknowledges that cross country is mentally taxing and challenging, but it has instilled in him the determination to persevere in all aspects of life.
As the new season approaches, Kerbo sets high personal and team goals. “I hope to run high 15 or low 16-minute 5ks and win the state individually,” Kerbo said. “As a team, I believe we have a shot at winning state or at least getting close.”
Looking forward to exciting matchups, Kerbo eagerly anticipates events like the Chile Pepper in Arkansas, the Stillwater Jamboree, and the State Meet, where he and his team will test their skills against formidable opponents.
Beyond high school, Kerbo has set high expectations for himself. “I am planning to attend college to run and become a mechanical engineer,” he said.
