Madi “Berry” Newberry

Choctaw High School

Choctaw High School wrestler Madi “Berry” Newberry is not only looking forward to the rest of the season, she isworking hard to help make the team better. We caught up with Berry for this edition on 9 Questions.

VYPE: Your nickname is Berry, so we’ll go with that. What grade are you in this year and how long have you been in wrestling?

Berry: I am a sophomore, and this is my first year wrestling.

VYPE: What made wrestling the right sport for you?

Berry: Wrestling is the right sport for me because I really found my people, and it is a way to take my mind off of things. When I am on the mat it becomes just me, my opponent, and the mat, I don’t have to think about anything else.

VYPE: Tell me about those teammates.

Berry: What I love most about my teammates is their personalities, they all are very kind and are willing to help you in any way possible.

VYPE: How has the team looked early in the season?

Berry: We don’t have a big team, but our team is coming together and helping each other in any way possible. Our team is really a family, on and off the mat.

VYPE: What is the goal this season?

Berry: The goal for this season is to win at least one match and improve as much as possible for next season.

VYPE: What makes being a student-athlete at Choctaw special to you?

Berry: I love the fact that, at Choctaw, my team is my family. Everyone is very accepting.

VYPE: Since you are new to the sport, what area do you feel you are improving in or getting better at doing on the mat?

Berry: I honestly don’t think there is one specific area I have improved most in. I walked into wrestling knowing absolutely nothing about the sport, so I’d say I have improved in everything.

VYPE: You’re only a sophomore, but what do you think you would like to do after you graduate?

Berry: After I graduate, I want to go to college and hopefully wrestle in college while working toward becoming an E.R Physician.

VYPE: What do you like doing in your free time? Berry: In my free time I really enjoy hanging out with friends, listening to music, and exercising.
