Q&A with Westmoore boys basketball coach Todd Millwee — Presented by Premier Healthcare

VYPE: What year is this for you as a head coach?
Todd Millwee: 9 years.

VYPE: How many years at Westmoore?
TM: 5th.

VYPE: Do you also teach? If so, what subject(s)?
TM: Geometry.

VYPE: We’re excited to see the Jaguars in action this year. What type of team can we expect to see?
TM: A team that plays team-first basketball on both ends. We like to play fast and free. We will be a fun team to watch!

VYPE: How are the guys feeling?
TM: The guys are excited about the season and confident that they can beat anyone.

VYPE: Talk about your staff this year. What type of experience do your coaches bring to the table?
TM: Beau Harrington is the lead assistant and in his seventh year with me at the high school level. He has worked under Bob Hoffman and Lon Kruger. Beau consistently brings energy, hard work and passion to the team. Sherief Stafford is a V and JV assistant that has been with me for 6 years. Sherief takes pride in being an example of team-first. He will take on any duty to help the team. We ask the guys to
serve each other and the community, coach Stafford demonstrates this in his roles on the team. Cory Barnard is a V and JV assistant in his third year with me at Westmoore. Coach B brings great organizational skills and communication to the table. We rely on him to be in charge of communications with parents/parents, to build our team calendars and to be in charge of stats. Payton Gordon is our head freshman coach in his 1st year on staff. Payton was a standout player at Westmoore not to long ago, so we use him on the scout team for varsity practice. He coached the previous two seasons at Brink junior high, one of our feeders. Payton is a hard worker that pushes the players to reach their potential. Hassan Alzeragi is in his first year with us at well. He is our graduate assistant coach. He was a member of the program as a player for the last 3 years. Hassan has shined in all his duties because he takes pride in any duty assigned to him. We have been very impressed with his maturity and dedication to what we are trying to do as a staff.

VYPE: Which current player has come along the farthest this offseason?
TM: Ivan Antwi Donkor– a very talented sophomore that is coming into his own. He can defend 1-5 and he is a 6-4 guard that can go.

VYPE: Which of your players has the best shoe game?
TM: Jayden “J-Boog” Thomas wins the shoe game.

VYPE: Which of your players is most likely to make others laugh in a serious moment?
TM: Caden Kerley.

VYPE: What’s it going to take for the Westmoore Jaguars to compete for a state title this March?
TM: To reach our goal we strive to win each day to get there. We want to stay together through the ups and downs of the season that will shape us.

VYPE: What’s your best advice to young coaches?

TM: Learn from some coaches who have built successful programs. Try to build a family culture that strives to serve each other and the community. Build a staff around you that is loyal and that wants to help the players grow in basketball and as young men.
