OFFENSE
Weapons are abundant for Choctaw. Quarterback Steele Wasel (6-4, 220, Jr.) is piling up Division-I offers and no wonder why. Wasel took over the starting spot and threw for 3,300 yards and 33 touchdowns. He has presence in the pocket, is elusive and can create big plays seemingly out of thin air. Tight end R.J. Jackson (6-4, 245, Jr.) is another of six Yellowjackets with Division-I offers. Jackson averaged close to 20 yards per reception on 32 grabs. He’s a relative newcomer to playing football and is just beginning to realize his massive potential. Jaxon Burchett (6-0, 175, Sr.) had over 800 yards receiving and is the top returning player on the outside. Choctaw has an incredibly versatile rushing attack. C.J. Smith (6-5, 195, Sr.) is a punisher. Smith is not a typical running back. At 6-5, he runs with surprising power and still has breakaway speed. La’Trell Ray (5-9, 165, Jr.) doesn’t need power. Ray can flat fly. He was clocked at 4.36 by laser in the 40-yard dash. His 47-yard scamper against Stillwater in the semifinals was key in propelling Choctaw to only its second state final ever. Jax Smith (6-1, 195, Jr.) had a big summer in the slot and looks like the next breakout weapon on offense. Senior Lamereon Curry transferred in from Carl Albert and is another big play threat at receiver. Cade McConnell (6-7, 305, Sr.) is one of the best ever to play the interior at Choctaw and is the anchor of the offensive line. Alton Robinson (6-4, 295, Sr.) goes by the nickname Big Country and has shown huge improvement in his agility to go with an already strong frame. Kicker Tommy Yousey also returns after calmly drilling the game-winner against Stillwater in the semifinals.
DEFENSE
Desean Brown (6-4, 260, Sr.) is a one man wrecking-crew at defensive end. Brown is one of the top players in Oklahoma regardless of position. He had 19 sacks as a junior and multiple pressures and hurries. Julius Pruitt plays the end opposite of Brown and adds a great presence in the locker room and huddle. Aaron McAffrey (6-0, 240, Sr.) and Alex Davidson (6-2, 245, Sr.) add size at the down positions in Choctaw’s multiple-front defensive look. Ethan Rone (6-0, 205, Sr.) is the top returning tackler for the ‘Jackets, bringing back 103 stops and four sacks to the middle of the defense. Spencer Boles (6-0, 200, Sr.) has a tremendous nose for the football. He’s always near the action and is just as effective walking up as a linebacker or playing the pass in the secondary. Bolton Hawkins (6-0, 185, Sr.) is another flyer for the ‘Jackets. Hawkins picked off three passes and made 65 tackles as a junior. C.J. Smith will likely play defense at the next level and can cover a ton of space in the secondary. Choctaw picked up steam in the playoffs, with much improved play from the defense. This is a unit that should hit the ground running in 2021, led by the ferocious Brown and a cast of proven starters. Choctaw ascribes to the G.O.L.D. standard, principles based on gratitude, ownership, leadership and discipline. The standard and expectation for the 2021 Yellowjackets is to turn that motto into a gold football in December.
