Mustang Lady Broncos Basketball Preview – Presented by First National Bank & Trust Co.

Coach: Katie Smith

21-22 Record: 22-5

The Lady Broncos have seen success the past few seasons and look forward to adding to it this season. They have advanced to the Class 6A state tournament three out of the last five years, but after losing several starters from last year’s squad, head coach Katie Smith says that her team is ready to show what they have. “We will be a young but very talented group this season,” coach Smith said. “We have only one senior and one returning starter from last year’s team. We are excited about this group; they love to compete and work hard every day.”

Parker Simonsen (5-6, Jr.) is the only returning starter from last year’s team which was full of seniors who all went to play collegiate basketball. She was usually guarding one of the top two players on the opposing team because of her ability to defend. She has a high IQ for the game and will have a huge role this season. She just received an offer to play basketball at the University of Central Oklahoma as a junior. Last year’s sixth man, Cherish Haywood (6-0, So.) comes from a family full of DI athletes. Cherish was also the team’s second-leading rebounder.

Mya Alston (5-11, Fr.) is a freshman guard standing six-foot tall. She is an amazing three-point shooter and did a great job this summer starting most summer games. The only senior on the team is Lunden Foreman (5-6, Sr.). She was a starter freshman and sophomore years and unfortunately tore her ACL before her junior season. She is an outstanding three-shooter, and the team will look to her for her leadership.

Other Lady Broncos that will look to contribute this season are JahMonica Johnson (5-4, Jr.), Elaina Florance (5-6, So.), Riley Trammell (6-2, Jr.), Avery Ragland (5-5, Fr.), Christal Long (5-8, So.), Camryn Engles (5-7, Jr.), Tionna Johnson (5-3, So.), Kamryn Bass (5-6, Jr.), Annie Ferguson (6-2, So.), and Aleigh Brayton (5-5, Jr.). The assistant coaches this season are Latoya Jackson, Karri Sears, Derrick Hightower, and Karly Lyons.
