OFFENSE

Carter Whitson returns for his second season at the helm for the Putnam City Pirates. The offense will see some new faces on the field, with only three starters returning from last season. Marcellous “TJ” Hawkins (5-11, 190, Sr.), who might be one of the most underrated athletes in the state, returns at quarterback. The Pirates use a spread offense with a run pass option element to open up the field for their athletes. Hawkins will have plenty of weapons to get the ball to, including wide outs Cameron Shine (6-1, 180, Sr.) and Shawn Hill (5-7, 145, Jr.). Shine has a deep threat element to his game, and Hawkins big-time arm shouldn’t have trouble finding him down the field. One of the big men up front, DMarkuz Denson (6-5, 220, Sr.) will open up some running lanes for both Hawkins and senior running back Dontrell Harrison (5-9, 180). The Pirates like to use a fast-paced tempo on offense, while also incorporating the vertical passing game to keep the opposing defense on its toes. Whitson believes Hawkins has what it takes to be a big-time player this season. “Hawkins is very athletics, but also has a big arm. Look for him to be one of the best quarterbacks in the state,” said Whitson.

DEFENSE

The defensive side of the ball is bringing back a great deal of starting experience from last year’s team, with seven starters returning. The Pirates run a 4-2-5 defense with aggressive blitzes and defensive line pressure. Defensive lineman D’Eric Holmes (6-2, 255, Sr.), Quentel Thompson (6-0, 350, Sr.) and Taje McCoy (6-2, 230, Jr.) will look to clog things up the middle. McCoy has gained over 40 pounds during the offseason and should be a force up front for any offensive line. Linebackers Demarion Fields (5-11, 195, Sr.) and Rylon Basco will hold the middle of the field down, while also getting their chances to blitz and make big plays in the backfield. Cornerback Mikah Holcomb (6-1, 175, Sr.) will be matched up with the opposing teams best wide receiver all season, and with his length, he should be able to make plays on the ball. Assistant coaches include Rufus Alexander, Brad Pennock, Matt Lane, Dakota Austin, Will Wortmann, Le Jones, Nic Huff, Tucker Calmus and Eric Combs.
